- New York's more than 670 nursing facilities provide over 41 million days of care to more than 300,000 patients each year.
- New York's nursing facilities employ more than 180,000 people.
- The number of nursing facility patients discharged to a lower level of care or to home has increased by 300% since 1991.
- New York's nursing facilities provided over 14 million physical, occupational and speech and hearing therapy treatments in 2002, including over:
- 8 million physical therapy treatments
- 5 million occupational therapy treatments, and
- 600 thousand speech and hearing therapy treatments.
- Nearly 80% of New York nursing facility patients are Medicaid dependent.
- The state's daily payment to nursing facilities for Medicaid patients does not sufficiently cover the cost of all of the following mandated services:
- 24-hour professional nursing care
- Therapies (physical, occupational, speech, etc.)
- Prescription drugs
- Dental services
- Social services
- Organized activities
- Room and meals
- Personal hygiene supplies
- Housekeeping
- Laundry services
