New York's nursing facilities employ more than 180,000 people. The number of nursing facility patients discharged to a lower level of care or to home has increased by 300% since 1991. New York's nursing facilities provided over 14 million physical, occupational and speech and hearing therapy treatments in 2002, including over: 8 million physical therapy treatments 5 million occupational therapy treatments, and 600 thousand speech and hearing therapy treatments. Nearly 80% of New York nursing facility patients are Medicaid dependent.
